A very fun and exciting read. Now having read this Lyra novel, I must read the rest
This is an early work from Patricia Wrede republished for the . I bought this book when it was first published, but initially abandoned it because of its slow start. I eventually read the book, but only after reading more of Wrede's books that i liked. I was charmed by the electronic explanation of how she re-wrote the beginning to improve the flow. A good story and a much better beginning. It's not as enjoyable as her Talking with Dragons series, but well-worth the time to read.
I love the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (and would happily read more!) and I enjoyed this book as well. Author Patricia Wrede's style is not fully developed into the richness of writing that she has later, although the plot is still quite interesting.
This is the first book in the Lyra series, and you can feel the history of the world in every chapter, it makes you want to explre more.
I have now read 2 books by this author and listened to her Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I have enjoyed every one. Her characters are believable, witty, and strong in their convictions. The stories are great with solid plots, interesting supporting characters, and wonderful magical lands that you can only wish to live in. I strongly recommend anything she has written.
Thoroughly enjoyable story. I read the Raven Ring in high school (Excellent book!) and have been wanting to read tales more from Lyra ever since. So glad I finally got around to reading these books. Engaging story line and enjoyable characters.
This is the first novel I've read by Ms. Wrede that I did not enjoy. The characters and dialog belonged in a political thriller, not in a fantasy. I was shocked. Ms. Wrede is among my favorite writers. Try a different one of her books instead.
